How It Started
I'm Vietnamese, born and raised in Saigon. My husband is American - he'd been coming to Vietnam for years on business long before we ever met.
When we got married, friends flew in from all over - the US, Hong Kong, Australia, UK,... For most of them, it was their first time in Vietnam. Around the wedding, we ended up playing tour guides, and a big part of that turned into shopping trips: helping everyone find gifts and specialties to bring home for family, coworkers, the people who couldn't make the trip.
It took way more effort than it should have. We went from shop to shop, translating labels, comparing prices, figuring out which dried fruit was actually good versus which one just had nice packaging. But by the end, our friends were genuinely thrilled - the coffee, the snacks, the little handmade pieces that felt like real Vietnam, not generic souvenirs.
More than one of them said almost the exact same thing: "I wish this had been easier to find - I would've bought so much more."
That comment stuck with us. If our friends - people who had us as personal guides - still found it hard to shop well, what about everyone else? The tourists with no local connections, or the expats who've lived here for years but never quite found the right places?
GoThaoDien grew out of that one trip, and a group of friends who flew home with full suitcases and big smiles.
